The Cigarette and the Weed (short, 1981)

Animated short film by legendary controversial animator Ralph Bakshi who is known for his animated projects such as the 1960s Terrytoons, Fritz the Cat, Coonskin, American Pop, Cool World, Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures and his guest appearance on Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon. The Cigarette and the Weed served as Bakshi's attempt to have a cartoon shown before a motion picture in movie theaters.

The short is about three minutes long and tells the story of a weed growing on a street corner and a discarded cigarette butt that rolls up to the weed. The two converse before the cigarette rolls into a puddle and is extinguished.[1]

Availability
The short has been screened at multiple film festivals[2], and a brief, audioless clip of it was featured in the 1982 film Halloween III: Season of the Witch.[3] On February 25, 2025, Bakshi himself released the entire short on his Twitter.

On the Air is an American television sitcom created by Mark Frost and David Lynch. It was broadcast from June 20 to July 4, 1992 on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC). The series follows the staff of a fictional 1950s television network, Zoblotnick Broadcasting Company (ZBC), as they produce a live variety program called The Lester Guy Show—often with disastrous results. On the Air was produced by Lynch/Frost Productions and followed Lynch and Frost's previous series, Twin Peaks. In the United States only three of the seven filmed episodes were aired, but the first and only season was broadcast in its entirety in the United Kingdom and several other European countries.

Discussing the show, Lynch said that "Absurdity is what I like most in life, and there’s humor in struggling in ignorance. If you saw a man repeatedly running into a wall until he was a bloody pulp, after a while it would make you laugh because it becomes absurd. But I don’t just find humor in unhappiness – I find it extremely heroic the way people forge on despite the despair they often feel."

Nightbreed is a 1990 American dark fantasy horror film written and directed by Clive Barker, based on his 1988 novella Cabal. It stars Craig Sheffer, Anne Bobby, David Cronenberg, Charles Haid, Hugh Quarshie, and Doug Bradley. The film follows an unstable mental patient named Aaron Boone who is falsely led to believe by his doctor that he is a serial killer. Tracked down by the police, his doctor, and his girlfriend Lori, Boone eventually finds refuge in an abandoned cemetery called Midian among a tribe of monsters and outcasts known as the "Nightbreed" who hide from humanity.

At the time of its release, the film was a commercial and critical failure. In several interviews, Barker protested that the film company tried to sell it as a standard slasher film, and that the powers-that-be had no real working knowledge of Nightbreed's story. In 2011 Russell Cherrington, Senior Lecturer in Film & Video Production at the University of Derby and long-time friend of Clive’s, watched the DVDs of the workprint tapes and saw the potential in the material for an ambitious project. After asking for a copy, Russell decided to use that newfound video footage and a copy of the early 2nd draft of the Nightbreed script to create a composite cut of the movie, representing what might have been Clive’s original vision, assisted by Final Cut Editor Jimmi Johnson. This version eventually became known as the Cabal Cut, a constantly evolving and galvanizing project, going through as many as 8 different versions, all different as the cut was tweaked here and there for pace with some feedback from Clive Barker himself regarding where some sections should go. According to Russell, when Clive saw this cut, he teared up.
