The film tells the story of a heartbroken woman (played by Laura Dern) who floats over an industrial wasteland and sings ballads of love after her boyfriend (Nicolas Cage) leaves her. Made before the unprecedented success of his cult-classic TV show Twin Peaks, it is the footage from an original play which was presented at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1989. The experimental work is named after a series of complex mosaics in geometric shapes designed by Lynch. He made them while he was studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and called them Industrial Symphonies.

Often seen as a spiritual companion to his 1990 film Wild at Heart because it also co-stars Dern and Cage, Industrial Symphonies No. 1 is a hallucinatory dream that explores the concepts of love and pain in the modern dystopia. Julee Cruise plays “the dreamself” of the heartbroken woman who sings beautifully, even singing from the inside of a trunk of a car at one point. Many of the songs from the musical were recycled in Twin Peaks, including two of Julee’s recordings “Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart” and “The World Spins”.

In 16th century Prague, Rabbi Loew (Albert Steinruck) interprets an alignment of stars as a sign that disaster is about to befall the city's Jews. The following day, Emperor Luhois (Otto Gebühr) bans Loew's people from Prague, prompting the rabbi to build a statue, known as the Golem (Paul Wegener), that he hopes to animate as a savior. Brought to life by an evil spirit, Astaroth, the creature is, at first, gentle and compassionate. That, however, quickly changes as the creature goes insane. German silent horror film and a leading example of early German Expressionism.

Nightbreed is a 1990 American dark fantasy horror film written and directed by Clive Barker, based on his 1988 novella Cabal. It stars Craig Sheffer, Anne Bobby, David Cronenberg, Charles Haid, Hugh Quarshie, and Doug Bradley. The film follows an unstable mental patient named Aaron Boone who is falsely led to believe by his doctor that he is a serial killer. Tracked down by the police, his doctor, and his girlfriend Lori, Boone eventually finds refuge in an abandoned cemetery called Midian among a tribe of monsters and outcasts known as the "Nightbreed" who hide from humanity.

At the time of its release, the film was a commercial and critical failure. In several interviews, Barker protested that the film company tried to sell it as a standard slasher film, and that the powers-that-be had no real working knowledge of Nightbreed's story. In 2011 Russell Cherrington, Senior Lecturer in Film & Video Production at the University of Derby and long-time friend of Clive’s, watched the DVDs of the workprint tapes and saw the potential in the material for an ambitious project. After asking for a copy, Russell decided to use that newfound video footage and a copy of the early 2nd draft of the Nightbreed script to create a composite cut of the movie, representing what might have been Clive’s original vision, assisted by Final Cut Editor Jimmi Johnson. This version eventually became known as the Cabal Cut, a constantly evolving and galvanizing project, going through as many as 8 different versions, all different as the cut was tweaked here and there for pace with some feedback from Clive Barker himself regarding where some sections should go. According to Russell, when Clive saw this cut, he teared up.
