The film tells the story of a heartbroken woman (played by Laura Dern) who floats over an industrial wasteland and sings ballads of love after her boyfriend (Nicolas Cage) leaves her. Made before the unprecedented success of his cult-classic TV show Twin Peaks, it is the footage from an original play which was presented at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1989. The experimental work is named after a series of complex mosaics in geometric shapes designed by Lynch. He made them while he was studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and called them Industrial Symphonies.

Often seen as a spiritual companion to his 1990 film Wild at Heart because it also co-stars Dern and Cage, Industrial Symphonies No. 1 is a hallucinatory dream that explores the concepts of love and pain in the modern dystopia. Julee Cruise plays “the dreamself” of the heartbroken woman who sings beautifully, even singing from the inside of a trunk of a car at one point. Many of the songs from the musical were recycled in Twin Peaks, including two of Julee’s recordings “Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart” and “The World Spins”.

Hotel Room (also known as David Lynch's Hotel Room) is an American drama anthology series that aired for three half-hour episodes on HBO on January 8, 1993, with a rerun the next night. Created by Monty Montgomery and David Lynch (who directed two episodes), each drama stars a different cast and takes place in hotel room 603 of the New York City–based "Railroad Hotel", in the years 1969, 1992, and 1936, respectively. The three episodes were created to be shown together in the form of a feature-length pilot, with the hope that if they were well received, a series of episodes in the same stand-alone half-hour format would be produced later. Following a lukewarm reception, HBO chose to not produce more episodes.

Noah’s Castle, adapted by Nick McCarty from a young adult novel by John Rowe Townsend and produced and directed by Colin Nutley, followed the story of the Mortimer family and their trials and tribulations in a world where financial ruin on a national scale is just around the corner. Food prices are rocketing, angry mobs roam the streets and rubbish remains uncollected (a familiar sight in the real world “winter of discontent” of 1978-1979, when widespread industrial action by public sector trade unions threatened to bring the country to its knees). Dad Norman (David Neal), a former soldier and now a shoe salesman, sees the collapse coming and moves the family to a huge house on the edge of town – the castle of the title – and begins hoarding food and other supplies.

A Warning to the Curious is a short film, the second of the British supernatural anthology series A Ghost Story for Christmas. Written, produced, and directed by the series' creator, Lawrence Gordon Clark, it is based on the ghost story of the same name by M. R. James, first published in the collection A Warning to the Curious and Other Ghost Stories (1925) and first aired on BBC1 on 24 December 1972.

It stars Peter Vaughan as Paxton, an amateur archaeologist whose attempt to track down one of the three legendary crowns of East Anglia causes him to be followed by the ghost of its last guardian, William Ager (John Kearney). He seeks the assistance of the vacationing scholar Dr. Black (Clive Swift) in order to return the crown and end the haunting.

In the neorealist tradition, the film utilizes a cast of non-professional actors, and is filmed entirely on-location throughout Southern Italy. The dialogue is taken directly from the Gospel of Matthew, as Pasolini felt that "images could never reach the poetic heights of the text." "The Island" is a 2006 Russian biographical film about a 20th century Eastern Orthodox monk. Pyotr Mamonov, who plays the lead character, formerly a rock musician in the USSR, converted to Eastern Orthodoxy in the 1990s and lives now in an isolated village. Film director Pavel Lungin said about him that "to a large extent, he played himself." Mamonov was first very hesitant to play in the film, but then was urged by his confessor to play the character. After the filming, one of the movie crew staff decided to stay on the island and live there as a hermit.
